God’s Will Comes First

“Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”… Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.”

(James 4:15; 17)

Our job in life is to do God’s will; it really isn’t our place to run around and do whatever we want to do.  How miserable are those who are always chasing after a whim: let’s run and do this, let’s run and do that… I’m bored, let’s do something else.  The truth is that this behavior is a symptom of a person who is doing little more than chasing the wind.

Our prayer should be for God’s will to be done, both for our lives and for the lives of others.  Our task should be the one that God would have us to do.  Not only is this a recipe for solid accomplishment, but it is the recipe for inner strength and for inner peace.  Doing the thing that we know we should do gives a satisfaction that is stronger and more profound than accomplishing anything that is not right… and it keeps us free from that nagging unrest that fills our minds with dread and guilt: do what is right!
