Where did the time go?

Over the years I’ve heard many people come up with suggestions, some very insistent, about what the church needs to be doing to minister to people.  Some of the suggestions are very good ones, but often we lack the manpower to put them into action.

One interesting thing I’ve noticed is that when we ask the one who has the burden on their heart if they would like to be involved in putting their idea into action, they very frequently, in fact usually, say that they would love to, but they’re much too busy right now…

So, let me see if I’ve got it this:  God has placed a great need on your heart, but you are much too busy to fill that need yourself, but you do have the time to criticize others for not answering your call? Hmmm…

Several years ago, another person came to us with a need.  He believed that we needed a prayer ministry, the “Prayer Warriors” to pray for needs that come up from time-to-time in the church.  Maybe someone who is ill would need prayer, maybe a family with serious problems, maybe… well maybe a lot of things.  His idea was a team of prayer warriors who would be the first point of contact for people in need, 24 hours a day.  The warrior on duty would immediately begin prayer for the need, day or night, and transmit the need to the rest of the team.

OK, sounded like a good idea.  The gentleman who brought the idea forward then said something that was like heavenly music; he would gladly start the ministry, recruit the team, and head it up.  He wanted to begin that very day!

By the way, did I forget to mention that this particular gentleman was suffering from terminal cancer and didn’t have long to live?

Even though he was fading, he diligently worked this ministry up until the very end, and now, years later it still bring comfort to others…

Yes, where did the time go?  I wonder what would happen if the rest of us had such perspective so that all of us might be able to see what was truly important.

  1. That’s a great perspective, Don. I once had a pastor who had exactly that attitude–if God laid a ministry on your heart, you were the one He wanted to handle it. The pastor didn’t take no for an answer. We learned to pray hard before broaching a new ministry idea with him.

I’ll bet you did! That was a smart pastor, too. If we let people delegate work up the leadership ladder too often,we end up with a great many good ideas that are never acted upon because there are somply not enough workers… while the majority miss out entirely on the blessings of service.

It reminds me of the 100 years of continuous prayer that the Moravians instituted.
