  1. I have a different view of the paradox, it says that the Apostles met at the colonnade, but the people were afraid to join them…many more were added to their numbers.

We’re dealing with two different situations, many people joined the church (were baptized) and probably attend their prayer services / private gatherings. But, they didn’t join them in public gatherings. This is like in gentile lands where people would meet in homes, but not in the public usage buildings or town squares. Or like the Jews in nazi Germany, where they would meet in homes, but synagogue worship was not done out of fear.

No it doesn’t say that, it says:

“The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade.” (5:12)

As for the rest of your comment, I quite agree; that was essentially my point…

  2. My thinking on the people not joining with the apostles and believers has been that those who were not yet ready to accept the apostles teaching completely were afraid to have any part of the group for the fear that they would end up as Ananias and Sapphira, for it was said that great fear fell on the church AND all who heard about that incident. But, that thinking is pretty close to what you descibed.
